2018 AYG: Team Nigeria win 103 medals, finish 5th
Team Nigeria finished as fourth runners-up after winning 103 medals at the 2018 African Youth Games (AYG) in Algiers which ended on Saturday.
The AYG targets the 14 to 18 age group and is planned to contribute to the development of African sport and to the growth of Olympic values.
The Algiers showpiece was the third edition of the competition, and Egypt finished at the top of the medal table, followed by hosts Algeria, then Tunisia, Morocco and Nigeria.
A total of 30 sports featured in the games that kicked off on July 18 and came to a close on July 28.
But Team Nigeria only took part in Football, Handball, Table Tennis,Swimming, Badminton, Wrestling, Judo, Boxing, Rowing, Beach Volleyball, Basketball, Canoeing, Volleyball, Gymnastics, Shooting, Tennis, Hockey, Cycling and Athletics.
According to the medals table from the organisers of the games Nigeria had a total of 103 medals with 29 gold, 32 silver and 42 bronze medals.
Weightlifting gave the team their richest haul of a total of 18, comprising 12 gold, five silver and one bronze medals; and in Wrestling the team won 19 medals made up of three gold, 10 silver and six bronze, while Athletics gave Nigeria 5 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze.
Meanwhile, Team Egypt won a total of 199 medals which include 101 gold, 55 silver and 43 bronze, as Algeria won 226 medals, which include 71 gold, 72 silver and 83 bronze.
Tunisia, on third spot, snatched 136 medals which include 36 gold, 46 silver and 54 bronze, while Morocco won 106 – 29 gold, 37 silver and 40 bronze medals.
